Fri 05 Sep 25: Zurich to Lucerne
Today marks one week away, and we bid farewell to Zurich after a 3 night stay. After breakfast we checked out of our room and walked the 500m with our luggage in light rain to catch a 0910 train to Lucerne. Only a 40 minute journey, we were soon on a bus to our next overnight stay at the Hotel Rothaus about 800m away from the Lucerne station. We could have walked had it not been raining. By 10:30, we had secured our baggage at reception, and headed out to explore Lucerne. Highlights included a stroll along the canal, over the historical wooden Chapel Bridge, past the Jesuit Church and to the Lion of Lucerne Memorial carved out of solid stone. Lunch was had in a large self serve cafeteria nearby, then we walked to the ferry terminal and joined a cruise on Lake Lucerne on the Panorama Yacht Saphir. We had steady rain up to this point, but a very heavy thunder storm as we boarded the boat saw the last of the rain for the day. The skies then cleared allowing wonderful views of the surrounding Lake District and into the mountains, with Mount Pilatus most prominent. After the cruise we returned to the hotel to check into our rooms, then I went out for another walk for about an hour while Noel stayed behind and found a nice cafe with John and Wendy. We were joined for dinner tonight by John and Wendy and Phil and Glynis at a great little Italian pizza place across the road from the hotel. The wood fired pizzas and a beer were very tasty. A walk around the block after dinner then back to our rooms ended a wonderful day.
