Day 20 - Wed 17 Sep 25: Milan to Stresa
Wed 17 Sep 25: Milan to Stresa
After a light breakfast in our room, I went for another long walk through the CBD for some photo therapy, while Noel stayed behind in the room. Another wonderful walk of discovery. I returned to the room at 1000 to meet up with Noel for coffee at a nearby cafe. Noel returned to the room again, while I went for a another walk and found the Shoah Memorial of Milan, a lessor known memorial hidden deep beneath Central Station. The Shoah Memorial of Milan, is located deep within Central Station on a sublevel below the main tracks. It was here that deportees arriving from San Vittore prison, were loaded onto livestock cars. Between late 1943 and early 1945, twenty RSHA trains, composed of livestock cars packed with thousands of prisoners, left from these tracks. (Read more about it here - Shoah Memorial of Milan).
I returned to the hotel room shortly before midday and we checked, out leaving our baggage at reception while we went for a bite to eat for lunch at another cafe nearby. We then returned to the hotel again and waited to be collected by our bus which we boarded with 27 new friends on our 17 day tour of Italy. The road along Lake Maggiore (a glacier lake) for the last 20 km to our destination of Stresa was very scenic, with pretty blue water and pre alps as back drop, and major alps in the background. Our home for the next 4 nights is the four star La Palma Hotel on the sixth floor and is very nice indeed. After checking into our room, Noel and I went for a leisurely walk into the township along the esplanade, then returned for a meet and greet drink, followed by a lovely 3 course meal with all our new friends. A lovely (albeit much later than usual) evening was had getting to know everyone.
