Mon 08 Sep 25: St Moritz
It's been another long, and incredibly memorable day in the alps - and a lot of photos. After breakfast with Robyn and Graham from Penrith (staying at the same hotel as us), we walked to the funicular station where we met up at 09:00 with the other two couples from Wynnum near Brisbane (Glenys and Phil, John and Wendy), who are staying at a different hotel. Using our free rail pass, we caught a Cog Wheel up the first secttion to Chantarella (2010m), then a 2nd Cog Wheel up Corviglia (2486m). Here we had a slow wander around, enjoying the views over St Moritz before continuing to the Piz Nair summit (3057m) in a cable car. Here we had another wander around the cable car station, then I walked the remaining few hundred metres to the very summit of Piz Nair. The thin air was very noticeable walking up any incline. At about 1100 we returned we to Corviglia, where we sat down for a cup of coffee outdoors soaking up the magnificent vista in the warm sunshine. The weather gods were smiling down on us again today. After our coffee, we returned to St Moritz township and walked to the train station about 15 minutes away. Here we caught a bus to Punt Muragl Talstation where we caught another Cog Wheel up to Muottas Muragl (2456m) for views from across the other side of St Moritz and the peaks that we just came from Piz Nair etc). First stop was a bite to eat sitting outdoors looking out over the more mountains and valleys, and St Moritz from a different view point in the beautiful weather. No words or photos can do the sites or experience justice. It was simply stunning. After lunch, I went for a wander up to another peak before returning to St Moritz via Cog Wheel then bus at 2:30pm. In town, a few of us wandered up to the Leaning Tower of St Moritz which has an inclination of 5.5 degrees, and dates back to the 12th century. It was part of the old Church of St. Mauritius, which was destroyed in 1893. From here Noel and I and Robyn and Graham had a late coffee in the town square then retruned to our hotel. All 8 of us met up again at our hotel bar for some travel planning and admin, then we all walked into the town centre for dinner at a nice Pizza and Pasta Restaurant. Tomorrow, we are all heading to Zermatt on the Glacier Express, but on two different trains (Noel and I are leaving on a train 1 hour later than the others), and we are all staying in different hotels. We all agreed, it's been a very memorable day.
